Gardening Badge

As spring blooms around us, we’re digging into gardening! By gardening, we mean planting something in the ground and it growing. Veggies, flowers, herbs, whatever! Join us over the next two weeks as we learn the history of gardening and find out more about victory gardens, take a “Smart Gardening 101 Class,” and plant our own gardens!

If you are interested in earning the Gardening Badge yourself, follow along and complete the steps with us. You can find our free Gardening Badge Guide here.

Steps to Earn the Gardening Badge

Step 1: Explore the history of gardening and victory gardens in times of need. Learn about the mental and physical benefits of gardening. Watch a Youtube video about planting in containers or building raised beds. Check out a book on wellness gardening, or listen to a podcast on how to start seeds and cultivate a thriving garden.

Step 2: Learn from others. Take an online or in person gardening lesson. Find a neighbor or family member who has a successful garden and ask them to show you around. Join a local gardening club. Bring a list of questions you have about seeds, soil, and plants that do well in your area.

Step 3: Create and take action. Plant a garden! Start a gardening journal to track your progress. Start some seeds. Select an appropriate site. Procure some containers, create raised beds, or plant right in the ground. Assess your soil and add compost if needed. Tend to your plants and watch them grow. Share your bounty with friends and neighbors. Be sure to tell others what you have learned about gardening!
